The department has two specialist physical education teachers (one male, one female). All pupils participate in over three hours of physical education per week during curriculum time. In addition to the time allocated within the curriculum, opportunities are made available at lunchtimes and evenings where pupils can extend their experiences in a wide range of activities.

The sporting opportunities within the curriculum include athletics, cross-country, cricket, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, swimming and indoor athletics. Fixtures are played during the week and at weekends. The school is affiliated to the Association of Junior Independent Schools, which organises various tournaments and championships. The Association has 30 member schools throughout the North West making a very competitive and well-run organisation.

The facilities of the school are excellent comprising of a fully equipped gymnasium, netball court, rugby pitch, athletics track and cricket nets. The school makes use of the Senior School's Astroturf pitch, cricket square and sports hall. The local swimming pool is within walking distance and the school delivers one lesson per week to junior pupils on a rota basis throughout the year.

All pupils are members of one of four houses (Birley, Clifton, Colborne and Drapers). Inter-house sports competitions are programmed throughout the year in athletics, cricket, cross-country, hockey, netball, rugby, rounders, tennis and swimming. The main emphasis is upon participation and all Junior pupils take part.
