The School has a Combined Cadet Force (CCF) contingent, commanded by Major Richard Taylor, who recently received an award for Meritorious Service from the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire.  He is assisted by the School Staff Instructor (SSI) Steve Moffatt, a 24 year career soldier formerly an RSM in the Army Air Corps in Afghanistan, and qualified members of staff. The Army is the largest section but the RAF section is becoming increasingly popular, under the guidance of Flt Lt Tessa Marsh.

The CCF is compulsory in the Fourth Year through to December in the Fifth Year, after which it is voluntary but a large number of cadets opt to continue and are promoted to Junior NCOs.  When the cadets reach Sixth Form they have the opportunity to gain further promotion to Senior NCO and are involved in teaching the syllabus to junior cadets.  Apart from basic drill, the training includes map and compass reading, leadership, first aid, weapon training, field skills, and simulated combat.  Activities include flying, small bore rifle shooting, climbing, mountaineering, camping, and adventure training, all of which is complementary to the DoE Awards scheme.

The School has its own indoor rifle range where cadets can fire the L144A1.22 rifle under supervision. There is an abseiling and climbing wall and an outdoor paint ball range where cadets can engage with concealed targets. Field Days and overnights camps are held over the year and these give the cadets the opportunity to fire the L98A2 assault rifle. There is an RAF Camp at Easter and an Army Camp in Summer. All cadets are encouraged to attend these camps. Many external courses are also available within the Army, and RAF and are heavily subsidised by the MOD.

The contingent has been very successful with several cadets chosen as the Lord Lieutenant's cadet and the CCF contingent also won the Best Contingent on Camp award for the last 2 years.

The contingent also takes part in the Cadet Expansion Programme, which facilitates cadets from the local high school, Carr Hill, who regularly attend CCF training and camps alongside our own cadets.
