13 January: KGS U15 v Stockport Grammar School

2-0 win

The U15’s started back well after a long break and were certainly ready for the game. The girls’ hit Stockport hard and dominated all over the pitch in the first half. We totally controlled the midfield limiting the opposition to very few attacking runs. Kirkham went 2-0 up with goals from Lucy Treadell and Beth Dowbiggin and went into half time with a comfortable lead.

In the second half Stockport stepped up and the match became more challenging. However, the Kirkham girls continued to play with real grit, were solid at the back and defended as a team to make the chance of Stockport pulling a goal back impossible. A great first game back and an exciting start to the second half of the season.

KGS U14s vs Stockport Grammar School U14s.

1-1 draw.

There was a slow start to the game as the Kirkham girls hadn’t played since November! However, as the game progressed the girls’ performance improved. Kirkham had majority of play in the oppositions half, however, struggled to convert their chances. Stockport battened well but Kirkham’s Lexie Fraser scored making it 1-0 to Kirkham. Stockport bounced back and due to Kirkham playing high up the pitch, Stockport utilised their high players and scored, making it 1-1 at half time.

Kirkham knew they now needed to execute their chances in the final half. After hitting the post and numerous short corners defended, the full time whistle went leaving the final score 1-1.

KGS U13s v Stockport GS

4-0 win

The U13s beat Stockport 4-0 in a match they dominated from start to finish. Early KGS pressure made it very difficult for Stockport to get out of their own half as the KGS attack and midfield worked hard to close down the space. Despite the heavy pressure, KGS struggled to carve open many clear cut opportunities and it took two wonderful finishes from Bo Madden on her reverse to break the deadlock and give KGS a 2-0 lead at half time.

In the second half, the KGS focus was on retaining possession and changing the point of attack in order to try and drag Stockport defenders out of the congested middle of the pitch. A much improved performance by all the girls meant a final score of 4-0 to KGS; it would have been more if not for the quality of the Stockport goalkeeper.

KGS U12 vs Stockport Grammar School

This was always going to be a difficult fixture against a strong Stockport U12 squad. Both teams were very determined from the off, trying to make the right decisions and distributing the ball quickly before being closed down.

Both games were end to end for most of the first half with KGS having some great opportunities through on goal. The last few minutes of the first half saw the A team concede their first goal whilst the B team ended the first half 0-0.

In the second half Stockport hit hard, using real speed upfront to create space and put pressure on both defences. More goals came but unfortunately not at the end that we wanted.

The final scores were: A team lost 0-4 and the B team lost 0-3. A great morning’s hockey with lots to take away and work on in our next training session.
