Lancashire Schools Cup Final

Kirkham U14s v LRGS

WON 12-5

The U14’s played Lancaster Royal Grammar School in the Lancashire schools Rugby Cup Final on Tuesday evening at Fylde RUFC. Kirkham knew their contact skills needed to be up to scratch to deal with their physical opposition, however, it was Lancaster that dominated possession in the early stages and Kirkham were forced to defend their line for the first twenty minutes. Lancaster eventually managed to push one of their many driving maul attempts over the Kirkham line but failed to kick the conversion. Kirkham continued to defend heroically which eventually resulted in a loose ball for Tobias P to pick up and charge for the Lancaster try line to score Kirkham’s first try. Arron P successfully converted this. From the next restart, Kirkham lost the ball but quickly turned it over again following a superb tackler from Parkinson on the half way line. Tight head prop Bailey Whitehead collected the loose ball and quickly moved it wide to left-winger Joe Medcalf who came onto the ball at pace. Medcalf fended off the first Lancaster tackler and set off down the wing, before stepping infield to evade two more covering defenders and put on the gas to finish off the try near the posts. This was also successful converted by Pope making the score 12-5 to Kirkham at half time.

During the second half, Lancaster continued to inflict their catch and drive game plan; however, the Kirkham pack stood up strong with front rowers Jamie L, Archie R and Matthew W doing the spade work. The Kirkham back row were immense in open play, with Rhys F  and Yande N carrying well and captain Jake M scrapping for everything. However, it was Kirkham’s defence that made the difference on the night with Ethan C, Gregor A and Tom Gut all put in fine tackling displays. No further points were scored and the game finished 12-5 to Kirkham.
