1st XI v Stockport Grammar School

KGS’ 1st XI hockey team played their final game of the 11-aside season on Wednesday against Stockport Grammar School. KGS dominated from the start playing some excellent hockey. Emily Marsh created some excellent opportunities down the right hand side of the pitch setting Keira Tomes free to drive into the D. Both Dani and Amy Merrick played an integral part within attacking play setting Natasha Hartley-Smith and Jess Cole through on goal.

Once the first goal was converted, it was one way traffic for the reminder of the game resulting in a convincing 4-1 victory to seal what has been an excellent 1st XI season.

The girls now look forward to the Cheadle 7’s tournament and their end of season awards night.

KGS 2nd XI v Stockport

The 2nd XI team travelled to Stockport for their final game of the season. It was a great end-to-end game with lots of chances from both teams. KGS continued to work the ball creating many opportunities for scoring but were unsuccessful. KGS kept possession up until the final few minutes with a final great goal from Phoebe Caunce putting the final score 1-nil to Kirkham. Their aim was to keep possession to secure a win and the girls were successful in completing the Upper 6s’ final game for Kirkham Grammar School with a win.

U14 Lancashire Hockey Tournament

The first game of the day was against Stonyhurst College. The girls started well with some excellent runs made by Poppy and Alice. The midfield worked well together and the game ended 0-0 with 1 point on the board.

KGS’ second game was against LSA. KGS had all the attacking play and were unlucky not to score on a number of occasions. A great attack down the right hand side with a ball into the D and an excellent finish by Emily resulted in 1-0 to KGS.

The final game of the day was against AKS. The KGS team started strong by testing their goalkeeper a number of times and had all the attacking play. A quick break away by AKS, where they converted a short corner, made it 1-0 to AKS. The girls continued to attack and defend well in what was a close game. Natalie, Lucy, Abby and Xara were solid in the defence and kept AKS at bay. Just before half time, AKS made it 2-0 with a scrappy goal.

During the second half, KGS defended skilfully and the game remained 0-2.  A fabulous day was had, where KGS finished in 2nd place overall. Well done to all girls who took part, especially to the 2nd year pupils who stepped up an age group!

Rugby - Warwick Tournament

KGS’ U15s took a development squad to Warwick last weekend. In a tough group, which included the hosts, the group did well to compete, but ended up falling into the Shield Competition. Here, they met Warwick 2nd VII, in what was an a close encounter, but KGS held their nerve and won the game thanks to a last minute try from Taran Mathauda with Hugo Loggenberg adding the crucial conversion to win the game 26-24.

In the final, KGS met Solihull School and play fantastically well, with Jasper Johnson, Harry Case & Freddie Tomlinson shining. Tries from Norman and Mathauda, at crucial times, saw KGS take a 19-5 lead with 2 minutes to play. Solihull then made it interesting scoring with just under a minute to play (19-12), but heroic defence from Luke Schmid managed to stop an almost certain try. A penalty for KGS meant they could kick the ball off to seal the victory and win the Shield.

Considering the lack of sevens experience from the squad, their improvement throughout the day was outstanding and they should look forward to the tournament next week at King's School, Macclesfield.
