TITLE: KGS Hockey vs Millfield School

The U16 & 1st XI squads travelled to Millfield School to further their preparations for the England Hockey competitions. The U16 squad took to the pitch first and certainly did not disappoint! It took a little time to settle but it wasn't long before the side started to dominate down the middle of the pitch. A great attacking run opened up top D for a snap shot resulting in Melling converting to open the score line. The squad needed to stay tight at the back with communication being key. Great defensive play kept the Millfield side out until they hit with a fast break to convert just before the half time whistle! The players maintained their composure and grew in confidence as they hit the final two quarters of the game. Unfortunately a late, but very good goal, resulted in the U16 being defeated 2-1 at the final whistle.
1st XI
The 1st XI hit the pitch at 7pm under lights! Tomlinson lead from the front, dominating the game with Margerison and Smith. The squad spent most of the first quarter in front of goal but struggled to convert. Goals came from both sides with Cooper slotting the first away followed by Tomlinson. KGS kept the score at 2-1 for the majority of the second half, still creating various chances in front of goal. A corner was blown against KGS at the final whistle with Millfield converting to take the game to 2-2.

TITLE: KGS U14, U13, U12 Hockey vs Westholme School
U14 vs Westholme
On Saturday morning, the Kirkham Grammar School U14 hockey team travelled to Westholme School for their first away fixture of the season, eager to build on last week’s victory over Rossall. KGS started the match with high intensity, dominating possession and putting constant pressure on the Westholme defence. Despite several promising attacks, the team was unable to convert their chances into goals. Against the run of play, Westholme broke through on a counter attack and managed to score, taking a 1-0 lead. However, KGS responded quickly and confidently. Shortly after conceding, Kirkham won a short corner, and Singleton slotted the ball into the net, bringing the score to 1-1 just before half time. KGS entered the second half determined to build on their momentum. The defence pushed high up the pitch, applying consistent pressure, while the midfield and forwards created numerous scoring opportunities. With time running out, Burrows found a moment of brilliance, slipping the ball through the Westholme goalkeeper’s legs to score the winning goal. Well done, girls!
U13A vs Westholme
KGS's U13 hockey team delivered an outstanding performance against Westholme School, securing a dominant 6-0 victory. The team started strongly, immediately taking control of the game and showcasing their intent. Two early goals from Godbold set the tone for the match, putting Kirkham in a commanding position within the opening minutes. Following a series of short corners, Hargreaves capitalised on a well-worked opportunity, adding her name to the scoresheet and making it 3-0 before half time. Goalkeeper Poppy had little to do, as the defence kept Westholme's chances to a minimum. The second half followed a similar pattern, with Kirkham continuing to dictate play. Hargreaves added three more goals to her tally, sealing the 6-0 win. It was an all-around brilliant performance from the entire team, with outstanding hockey played throughout.
U12A vs Westholme
It was an exciting day for Kirkham Grammar School’s U12 hockey team as they played their first away match of the season. Despite being a new team, Kirkham started the game confidently, with impressive passing from defence to attack, creating several early opportunities. As the match progressed, it was clear that the team is beginning to gel, showing improved teamwork with each game. Despite their dominance, the first half ended goalless, with both sides working hard but unable to find the breakthrough. In the second half, KGS continued their strong play and were rewarded when Norcross calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net, giving the team a well-deserved lead. However, Westholme responded quickly, equalising shortly after. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with both teams showing great spirit and skill. Overall, it was a fantastic effort from the U12s, with plenty of positive signs for the future!

TITLE: KGS U14B VS Scarisbrick Hall School.
In a tightly contested match, our girls showed great determination, but unfortunately fell just short, losing 10-12 after four hard-fought quarters.
First Quarter: 3-4. The game started off evenly, with both teams battling for control. Our girls found it challenging to keep up with the pace and adjust to the quick changes in play. However, despite some initial difficulties with footwork and positioning, the team managed to stay within one point of the opposition, ending the quarter narrowly behind at 3-4.
Second Quarter: 4-8. The second quarter saw the opposition extend their lead, taking advantage of some missed opportunities and turnovers. The pace of the game continued to test our team, and difficulties with controlling feet and following the rules under pressure led to some costly mistakes. At halftime, the score stood at 4-8, with the girls needing to regroup.
Third Quarter: 8-10. After a quick pep talk and some adjustments, the girls came back fighting in the third quarter. They worked hard to settle into the game, improving their footwork and better understanding the rules. Their efforts in both attack and defence began to pay off, with several impressive turnovers created by their relentless pressure. By the end of the quarter, the team had closed the gap, trailing just 8-10.
Final Quarter: 10-12. The final quarter was a tense affair, with both teams giving their all. Our girls continued to apply pressure, and their improved coordination and teamwork allowed them to match the opposition goal for goal. Despite their best efforts, the team couldn't quite overturn the deficit, ending the game with a 10-12 loss.
Though it was a challenging match, the girls demonstrated great resilience and improvement throughout, particularly in adapting to the pace and rules. Their hard work in defence and attack resulted in some excellent turnovers, and they finished the game on a strong note, showing plenty of promise for future matches.

TITLE: U12A&B U13 U14 U15 & U16 Rugby Vs Audenshaw School
U12A
Kirkham’s Under 12 side delivered a strong defensive display in their match against Audenshaw this weekend, demonstrating solid teamwork and exceptional tackling. From the start, the Kirkham defence applied immense pressure, tackling low and effectively containing Audenshaw's attack. Throughout the game, Kirkham's direct approach in attack saw them gain ground, with their players driving hard into the opposition's defence. However, it was their structure and defensive resilience that truly stood out. The trio of Oliver, Coward, and Yates were particularly impressive, leading the charge with their commitment and skill, each putting in an outstanding individual performance. Other notable mentions go to Cure, Pickervance, and Anders, who also played key roles in Kirkham’s determined effort. Their contributions in both attack and defence helped ensure that the team maintained its high level of intensity throughout the match. Despite the overall solid performance, there are still areas for improvement. Greater awareness of passing opportunities could help further develop the team’s attacking threat, as looking for more offloads or passes would add an extra dimension to their play. It was clear to see the hard work on the training ground paying off, with Kirkham displaying much better structure and cohesion compared to previous weeks. The team worked tirelessly for each other, ensuring they remained organised and focused on both attack and defence. Overall, it was a positive performance from Kirkham, and the team will no doubt take confidence from their strong defence and improved structure as they continue to progress throughout the season.
U13
The Under 13 squad played superbly well in the 1st half, tackling with aggression and running the ball with some skill. Two tries were scored by Sumner and Duckett, both in reply to two Audenshaw scores to make the half time score 2 tries each. In the second half Audenshaw really took the game to Kirkham and with an obvious plan, started to feed the ball to their big ball carriers. Kirkham tried in vain to halt the constant wave of attacks but brute force told in the end as Audenshaw pulled away. Kirkham kept trying to launch their own attacks and looked impressive when moving the ball, however a couple of awry kicks allowed Audenshaw to counter attack from deep which led to two more scores near the end of the match.
U15
Last Saturday KGS produced an emphatic performance in response to two defeats in a row. Kirkham were up 33-0 after just 12 minutes thanks to tries from Clarke, Walls, Gillett (2) and McKay. This allowed the bench to be emptied early with Peters and Addison making good contributions. Kirkham kept the score ticking over with regularity with Smith scoring a well worked try to close the game out. Credit to Audenshaw they scored 2 tries of their own but KGS' attack continued to be rampant scoring an impressive 11 tries on the day. Well done boys.
U16
Kirkham Grammar School U16s delivered a dominant performance, defeating Audenshaw School 66-19 in a one-sided encounter. The home side was in control from the outset, displaying exceptional teamwork and skill to put Audenshaw under constant pressure. Kirkham’s prolific scoring was spearheaded by Shaw, who put on a remarkable individual performance, crossing the try line four times. Davies was also in outstanding form, contributing a hat-trick of tries. Gerrard added to the tally with two well-taken tries, while Twose rounded off the scoring with a solo effort. Yates was near-perfect with the boot, converting 8 of the 10 tries to add to Kirkham’s dominant score line. Although Audenshaw fought back and managed to score 19 points, they were no match for Kirkham’s overwhelming attacking power and cohesive team effort. A standout team performance by Kirkham that showcased their attacking depth and defensive strength.

TITLE: KGS 1st XV vs Scarisbrick Hall School
Kirkham Grammar School 1st XV continued their impressive form in the Continental Tyres U18 Schools Cup with a commanding 36-5 victory over Scarisbrick Hall School in the 2nd round. Kirkham wasted no time in asserting their dominance, with Wood crossing the whitewash early to put the home side in front. Milligan added the extras with a well-taken conversion to give Kirkham a 7-0 lead. Kirkham’s forward pack then took charge, with hooker Littler showing his prowess, driving over for two tries in quick succession. One of those was converted by Milligan, taking the score to 19-0. The home side’s relentless pressure continued as prop Blackburn powered through for a well-deserved try, stretching the lead further. Lyster added his name to the scoresheet with a clinical finish, with Milligan converting once more, making it 31-0. Scarisbrick Hall fought back valiantly and managed to break through the Kirkham defence for a consolation try, but they were unable to convert, leaving the score at 31-5. Kirkham’s final try came from full-back Kelso, who capped off a flowing team move to seal the game at 36-5, confirming their place in the next round of the competition.
Kirkham’s all-around team effort, spearheaded by their strong forwards, proved too much for Scarisbrick Hall. Milligan’s consistent kicking, combined with the powerful play from the likes of Littler and Blackburn, ensured a comfortable win. Kirkham now look forward to the next round with confidence, having built on their strong start to the competition.

TITLE: AJIS Cross Country
On Wednesday 25 September, 28 pupils from J3 & J4 took part in the AJIS Cross Country at Rossall. This annual event is always well attended, with roughly 20 schools entering up to 7 runners in each category. The event got underway with the J3 boys race. In this race Ollie managed to finish in 4th position, which was our highest position of the day. The next race to take place was the J3 girls. Last year, our girls ended up overall winners in this event and this year's J3 girls followed suit, bringing the plate back to Kirkham again. The following two races involved our J4 pupils, who all worked tirelessly throughout the race and showed real determination and resilience to get around the course as quickly as possible. We don't know exactly where we came in the team competitions, but are confident we weren't too far off the top three. Well done to all who took part.

TITLE: U10 Rugby Vs St Mary's Hall
On Saturday 28 September some of our J3 pupils took part in a rugby fixture versus St Mary's Hall. The game was very competitive with both teams managing to defend attacks for the first five minutes. Eventually Kirkham managed to break down the opposition and score, going into the half time break 1 score to nil. In the second half there was a few more dangerous attacks, with both teams starting to grow into the game. Both teams managed to score 3 tries in the second half in a fantastic display of rugby. Well done to all of the boys who took part.

TITLE: U11 U10 & U9 Hockey Vs St Mary's Hall

On Saturday, KGJS hosted Stonyhurst St Mary's Hall. This fixture saw our U11, U10 & U9 girls in action on the hockey field. The combined year groups formed two teams with plenty of hockey played in quarters rather than halves. This gave all the girls opportunity to play in a variety of different playing positions and reflect upon each quarter played. Both teams took lots of positives away from the fixture creating many attacking situations. The teams demonstrated their work rate and team spirt in some high energy game. It was a wonderful Saturday morning of hockey, well played Girls.
