AJIS U9, U10, U11 Rugby Vs Sedbergh

DATE: Monday 25 November 2024

On Wednesday 27 November the J2, J3 and J4 rugby teams took part in a fixture Vs Sedbergh School. With the recent weather being so poor, the pitches were heavy but all of the pupils involved were just grateful we could play.

U11

The U11s played some fantastic attacking rugby scoring a number of long distance trys and the defence worked extremely hard, showing great commitment to shut Sedbergh down. After the first half of the game, the score was tied, but towards the last third, Sedbergh managed to score a couple of unanswered trys.

U10

In the U10s game, the team continued to show progression from the AJIS fixtures last week. The team were quite dominant throughout the match, scoring lots of trys and only conceding two. Towards the end of the game, the team started to develop their passing game, moving the ball around the field to the spaces.

U9

The U9s fixture was a similar contest to the U11s game. A very close match, with both teams trading blows and scoring. Some great running rugby was played, with both teams keeping the ball alive in order to get the better of each other. In the end, KGS managed to score two unanswered trys, coming out on top.

KGS U16 Rugby vs LRGS U16 - Lancashire Cup QF

DATE: Wednesday 27 November 2024

KGS U16s faced LRGS U16s in a fiercely contested Lancashire Cup Quarter Final, sticking to their game plan and playing to their strengths despite the challenging opposition. The boys came out fired up, determined to put in a strong performance. Although the score line remained competitive, LRGS struck first, opening the scoring with a try and conversion to go 0-7 ahead. Kirkham responded swiftly when Jack made a brilliant run after receiving a clearance kick, gaining crucial ground before offloading to Jagart, who sprinted from halfway to score a well-deserved try, converted by Ollie to level the game at 7-7.

Unfortunately, LRGS capitalised on a few missed tackles and mistakes, crossing the line twice more before half-time to take a commanding lead. Despite Kirkham's best efforts to regain control in the second half, LRGS added two more tries to their tally. Though Kirkham didn’t manage to execute their chances, standout performances from Ollie P, Jack, Ollie, James, Tom, and Sam kept the team competitive in both attack and defence. The final result didn’t reflect the effort and determination shown by the KGS side, who fought hard throughout a challenging encounter.

Kirkham’s defence was particularly impressive, with the team putting in a great effort to tackle low and prevent AKS from gaining any momentum. Their hard work paid off with a series of well-earned tries. Oli led the scoring with two tries, while Noah, Ted, Roo, and Seb also crossed the line to contribute to Kirkham’s success. Kirkham Grammar vs Denstone College – Friendly Fixture

Date: Saturday 30 November 2024

U14B

The Under 14B Squad had a resounding win against Denstone College, scoring Seven tries in the process. The pick of the try scorers was Moore with a hat-trick as he made some powerful breaks from the base of the scrum causing havoc amongst the Denstone defence. Kirkham moved the ball at every opportunity which allowed the wingers much freedom out wide. The whole forward pack functioned well, in particular Wiper, Pilkington and Rhodes took the game to their opponents with some forceful running. The other tries for Kirkham came from Wiper (2), Hodgson and Rhodes with scrum half Thwaite converting all but one of the tries.

U14A 36-0

Kirkham U14A bounced back on Saturday, after their narrow loss to the select Trafford Schools team last time out, by putting in a clinical performance on a heavy pitch beating Denstone College convincingly.

Kirkham opened the scoring after two minutes with Elleray bursting through to score, the next twenty minutes saw both teams getting to grips with the heavy conditions with both defences very much on top, until KGS showed great patience working through several phases in Denstones twenty two before finally creating space for the alert Ince to dart down the blindside scoring under the posts for Robinson to convert, KGS scored again on the stroke of half time after again working through several phases, this time it was O. Smith who powered over with Robinson again converting.

Five minutes into the second half with Denstone pressing hard, Robinson with a neat bit of skill intercepted and sprinted over from half way, with five minutes left the rejigged backline handled well picking off Denstone defenders to allow Ince to dart in at the left-hand corner, in the final minute Rawlinson powered over with Ince converting.

U15 26-36

KGS U15s took on Denstone College U15s in a friendly fixture that provided an exciting, end-to-end contest. Coming off a tough cup game earlier in the week, Kirkham faced this match with a depleted squad due to injuries, offering several players the chance to step up. Despite the challenges, the game was a thriller, with both teams exchanging tries in a closely fought battle. The final score of 26-36 reflected the intensity of the game, with Kirkham showing plenty of ambition but falling just short. Kirkham put together some fantastic attacking plays, creating numerous scoring opportunities, but they struggled to convert all of them into tries. Denstone capitalised on some missed tackles and defensive errors, allowing them to gain an edge in the scoring. However, Kirkham's resilience shone through, with standout performances from Ollie, Jack , and Kartar, who made powerful runs that kept the team in contention. Their determination in attack was evident, even though the support play occasionally lacked the sharpness needed to fully capitalise on these efforts. As the game wore on, the physical toll of recent matches was evident, with many players digging deep to find the energy to compete until the final whistle. Despite the tired bodies, Kirkham’s commitment never wavered, and their effort was commendable. Though they fell at the final hurdle, the team can be proud of their performance in what was an entertaining and hard-fought match, showing both heart and determination in the face of adversity.

1st XV 43-28

Kirkham 1st XV delivered a commanding performance to secure a 43-28 victory over Denstone College in a thrilling encounter.

Kirkham got off to a flying start, with powerhouse Ogbonnaya crossing the line twice to put early pressure on Denstone. Kelso followed suit, scoring a brace of his own with some scintillating attacking play. Bray, Cope, and Carter added further tries, showcasing Kirkham’s offensive depth and flair.

Wilson was reliable with the boot, slotting four conversions to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Denstone fought valiantly, scoring three tries of their own, but they were unable to contain Kirkham’s relentless attack. The result highlighted Kirkham’s clinical finishing and cohesion as they continue to improve as a team.

Kirkham Grammar vs RGS Newcastle– National Plate Last 16

Date: Tuesday 26 November 2024

The U15s travelled to RGS Newcastle in the last 16 of the National Plate.

After a quick start, Kirkham forwards scored a well worked try with Kelso the man to get it over the line. Lawson made a good kick from the touchline to make it 7-0.

Kirkham had much of the play but a combination of handling errors and not fully understanding the referee’s interpretation at the breakdown gave the host some field position. Ultimately this would work well, with their 13 scoring a well worked try, with their 6 scoring on the stroke of half time to make it 14-7 to the hosts. The second half saw Kirkham on the front foot again with some dominant carries from Wright and Martins. After some concerted pressure on the line Walls bagged a score which again was converted by Lawson to make it 14all. In the National Cup regulations, if the scores a level on tries and conversions the away team progresses. Unfortunately a lapse in concentration saw the hosts take the lead with 10 minutes to go. But a brave and powerful finished saw Kirkham camped on the try line for the remainder of the match and some great composure from the forwards saw Wright score with the last play of the game with a cool and collected Lawson slotting the extras to tie the game.

The Quarter Final will be drawn before Christmas, with the next round being played in the New Year. Well done to all involved
