Kirkham’s Rugby Squad Shines in Prestigious National Competitions

In the final week of the senior rugby calendar, Kirkham Grammar School embarked on an exciting and demanding challenge, competing in two of the most prestigious school rugby tournaments in the country: the Rosslyn Park Sevens and the Sedbergh National 10s. Under the dedicated coaching of Dan Bibby, the squad had been meticulously prepared for these high-level competitions, and their performances did not disappoint.

Despite falling just short in the Sedbergh Tens' final, Kirkham’s performance across both tournaments was nothing short of remarkable. The team demonstrated incredible character, resilience, and skill. Sevens and Tens captain Harrison Causey was named Player of the Tournament, with Alfie Guthrie and Archie Iddon also earning praise for their standout performances.

This inspiring squad effort will undoubtedly generate excitement and pride throughout Kirkham Grammar School, reinforcing the school’s reputation as a powerhouse in schoolboy rugby.

Rosslyn Park Sevens: A Strong Showing

Kirkham kicked off their campaign at the Rosslyn Park Sevens on Thursday and Friday. The team delivered an outstanding performance, making it through to the last twelve in the quarterfinal pools. Their success in the tournament demonstrated the squad’s skill, determination, and ability to compete against the very best in schoolboy rugby.

Sedbergh National 10s: A Thrilling Run to the Final

Following their impressive sevens performance, Kirkham transitioned into the Sedbergh National 10s tournament, where they welcomed eleven additional players into the squad.

Day One:

Kirkham played three pool games, securing victories against Dulwich College and Cokethorpe School—dominating the latter with a commanding 50-0 win. Despite a tough loss to Hampton School, their strong performances ensured qualification for the day two cup pools.

Day Two:

Monday’s action began with a clash against National Schools Cup finalists QEGS Wakefield. Kirkham delivered a solid performance, winning 17-5. Next up were the tournament hosts and reigning champions, Sedbergh. In a thrilling encounter, Kirkham edged out the defending champions 22-20, marking a significant triumph.

With both Kirkham and RGS High Wycombe having defeated Sedbergh and QEGS, their match effectively became a semifinal. The game was fiercely contested, with both teams trading blows, but Kirkham landed the decisive score to claim a hard-fought 19-17 victory and secure a place in the final.

In the final, Kirkham faced Brighton College, who had just won the Rosslyn Park Sevens days earlier and were aiming for a rare and prestigious double. Kirkham started strongly, taking an early lead and nearly extending it before a missed try-scoring opportunity. Brighton capitalized on their chances and, despite Kirkham’s relentless efforts, managed to hold on for the win, denying Kirkham the title.
