KGJS U11 Cross Country // The Rawthey Run

On Thursday 16 January KGJS Cross Country team travelled to Sedbergh to compete in The Rawthey Run. The event is spilt into U11 Girls and U11 Boys Races. The Rawthey Run is a challenging course which takes runners over hill and vale, through woods and water, and over the occasional log jump. Our Junior runners took on a 1.6km circuit. The course was extremely muddy making the grounds slippery creating difficult terrain for our runners to navigate. Our runner gave it their all demonstrating a level of resilience which we as staff were all so proud of. There was a real sense of team spirit amongst our young athletes as they helped one another on the course and cheered each team on.

On Saturday 18 January Our J3 & J4 Netball Team travelled to St Mary’s Hall Stonyhurst School. The girls formed 3 teams rotating on the court to play against SMH. The teams played some lovely netball showing their determinations and passing skills to progress the ball up the court. The girls rotated playing positions to ensure all players experienced attacking and defending positions. A big shout out to Paloma who was our player of the match showing her quick reactions to intercept the ball and sportsmanship volunteering to play for our opposition.

KGS U13 Rugby Fixtures // Hutton & Rodillian Academy.

The Under 13 squad enjoyed two very competitive fixtures against Hutton and Rodillian Academy on Saturday, playing half a game against each School. The freezing conditions certainly played their part in Kirkham`s first game against Hutton, with several passes spilled. Both teams possessed solid defences which were difficult to break down, however Kirkham did come up with a score after much pressure around the Hutton line, Toby Cox touching down. Hutton replied with a score of their own as the teams remained deadlocked until the end of the half.

Against Rodillian Kirkham enjoyed their fair share of the ball, using it wisely by trying to stretch the Rodillian forwards, several penalties against Rodillian meant they found it difficult to gain any rhythm however. Kirkham went a try up through Isaac Taziker and then conceded one two minutes later but found the will to keep pressing forward. The next score came from a pick and go from Cox with a third coming late in the half from Raurie Sumner form a pick and go as Kirkham managed to hold one and win the half by three tries to one.

KGS U15 Rugby Quarter Final // Bolton School  KGS 26-6

Kirkham travelled to Bolton School in their first game of 2025 in the Quarter Final of the Lancashire Cup. After initial pressure, Kirkham gave a penalty away on half way, which saw Bolton apply some good pressure. After defending for the best part of 15 minutes, Bolton kicked a penalty to go 3-0 up. KGS' response was positive as they started to get into their flow. On their first entry into the Bolton 22, Kirkham scored through Clarke with Lawson adding a good conversion from the touchline to make it 7-3. Bolton again came back at Kirkham and has total possession for the remainder of the half, which resulted in another well struck penalty on the stroke of half time to make it 7-6 to KGS at the break.

Kirkham came out of the blocks quickly and started to exert their own play on their hosts. It was Bolton's turn to give a string of penalties away, which allowed Kelso to burrow over from short range (12-6). As the half progressed, Kirkham's stronger fitness started to show as they now had large periods of possession and territory. This resulted in some excellent ball movement along with an even better finish from Smith to give a bit of daylight between the sides (19-6).

In the dying moments of the game, Kelso finished another excellent performance with his second try which again was converted by Lawson; bringing the final score to 26-12. In the Semi Final Kirkham travel to Stonyhurst College.

KGS U12 & U13 Hockey Home Fixture // Wakefield

On Saturday KGS hosted Wakefield with our U12A & B teams putting in a sterling performance. From the start whistle, Addison and Townsend controlled the Kirkham defence making some excellent passes to the forward line. Lawson and Bradley made some excellent attacking runs resulting in multiple shots on goal. Unfortunately, Wakefield opened the scoreline with a well worked open play goal but KGS were ready to hit back. Elleray and Norcross linked up well together to retain possession of the ball and create attacking chances towards goal. Smith had a great defensive impact on the game helping the attack to equalise close to the half time whistle. It was all to play for in the second half with the ball shifting from end to end. Ainsworth made some fantastic saves throughout the match with all players having a tremendous input throughout the game!

The U12B team got off to a great start with Davies, Lui and Mitchell demonstrating great skill in the midfield area. Tomlinson let nothing past in defence which released Wiper up the pitch to attack on goal. It wasn’t long before the first goal was converted with KGS taking a 1-0 lead. Omer made some great saves as the KGS side absorbed some pressure with Tomlinson and Lui clearing off the line. Wakefield hit back with an equaliser and continued to put pressure on the KGS defence. Mitchell made some great runs down the line but it wasn’t enough to stop the Wakefield side from converting two further chances. Final score 3-2 to Wakefield.

The U13A squad continued their winning ways putting in a great performance! The KGS side hit Wakefield hard, playing the ball around the defence to create chance after chance in front of goal. It wasn’t long before the first goal was slotted home with a well worked move from Godbold, Hargreaves and Butler-Reid. The girls continued to play some excellent hockey resulting in 3 further goals before the half time whistle. In the second half KGS stayed composed, and played some outstanding hockey resulting in a further 5 goal taking the final score to 9-0.

The U13B team followed suit with an equally outstanding performance. Grice and Walls linked up well in front of goal whilst Whittle, Butcher and Captain, Airton worked well together in defence. KGS opened the score line with a well worked open play goal. Branthwaite made some excellent runs from midfield to open up attackers, Mcillwam and Pickering in front of goal resulting in a further 2 goals. A great team performance with the final score finishing at 3-0
